Infrastructure Development

Important factors to economic growth include infrastructure development such as ports, roads, and airports.  Mexico is continually enacting initiatives to stimulate infrastructure development.

Panama to Puebla Plan (PPP)

The purpose of this plan is to stimulate industrial, entrepreneurial, human, and ecological development of the entire region and to integrate the activities of Central American countries.  This plan is funded by the Inter American Development Bank and the World Bank.  Members of the plan include:

  • Belize
  • El Salvador
  • Costa Rica
  • Honduras
  • Guatemala
  • Nicaragua
  • Panama
  • Mexico

The plan has the following initiatives:

  • Human development
  • Sustainable development
  • Prevention and mitigation of natural disasters
  • Communication integration
  • Trade facilitation
  • Energy interconnection
  • Telecommunications integration

As a result, the power grids of Guatemala and Mexico are now linked.  Mexico also plans to expand and modernize its airports, railroads, and ports.  One of its initiatives includes constructing and modernizing 1800 miles of highways along major trade corridors and ports.

Pacific Ports

Port production takes high priority considering that Mexico provides the shortest land route between Atlantic consumption and Pacific production.  The development of a large-scale container port on Mexico’s Pacific coast is expected to alleviate the problems arising from the inability of jumbo container ships to dock in older facilities or navigate through the Panama Canal and the congestion and backlog occurring at the U.S. ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.  Major port areas are Manzanillo, Lazaro Cardenas, and Punta Colonet.

Punta Colonet
One such port development is that of Punta Colonet, located on the Baja coastline south of Ensenada.  This new port is expected to create thousands of new jobs, thereby putting a new city on the map.  Although most of the real estate is owned by small ejido groups, the real estate prices for the land around Colonet have already soared from five cents a square meter to five dollars
