Mexico's Municipal Government Structure

Mexico’s Municipal Executive Branch

Mayor (Regente)
The Mayor is elected by simple majority and serves one six-year term.  He cannot be re-elected

Mexico’s Municipal Legislative Branch

Municipal Council (Ayuntámiento)
The function of this Council is to implement state laws for municipalities and to approve urban development plans.  Note that the State has no direct authority over them.

The Council oversees the following:

  • street lighting
  • water and sewerage
  • traffic
  • public safety
  • public parks
  • collects real estate taxes

The Council may also assist the federal and state governments in the following:

  • emergency fire and medical services
  • education
  • environmental protection
  • maintenance of monuments and historical landmarks

Administrative Courts of Contention (Tribunal Contencioso Administrativo)
